Beginners Courses

So you want to learn to fence? Whether fencing is something you've always wanted to try, you've recently taken part in a taster session, or you just want to try something new, we're sure you'll enjoy our beginners courses. All courses are led by one of our qualified coaches, and include full kit hire and insurance as part of the price.

We have a range of intake nights throughout the year, for 2017 these are Thursday:
7th September
5th October

Our club is split into three sections based on age: Musketeers (7-10), Juniors (10-14) and Seniors (15+). Courses in all sections start on the intake nights detailed above. Courses are tailored to be age specific but generally follow the weekly format of:
Week 1 - Learning the fundamentals of Fencing
Week 2 - Refining your attacks
Week 3 - Strengthening your defence
Week 4 - Tactics of Fencing - applying what you know during a bout

The current timings and costings of our beginners courses are as follows:

Musketeers, for ages 7 - 10, 5 week course costing £25.00, runs from 7.30 to 8.30 pm.

Juniors, for ages 10 - 14, 4 week course costing £28.00, runs from 7.30 to 9.00 pm.

FAQs

What should I wear? - We ask that all participants wear sensible sports clothing. Ideally trainers, a T-shirt and jogging bottoms. For safety reasons we do not allow you to fence in shorts or jeans.

What should I bring? - We recommend a towel, particularly during warmer months as you will get hot whilst fencing and a drink or money to buy one.

Do I need any specialist equipment? - No, we provide all of the equipment you'll need for the beginners course.

What's included in the cost of the course? - Your tuition for 4 / 5 weeks, all the equipment you'll need for the course and 1 years British Fencing Starter membership which provides you with insurance cover to fence at the club.

Do you cater for people with special needs and/or disabilities? - Yes, the club aims to be as inclusive as possible. Please do discuss your individual requirements with us.

Do I need to book? - Yes, booking your place on our beginners courses ensures that we will have coaches and equipment ready for you when you start.

Can we learn as a family? - Yes, whilst we generally do tailor courses to be age specific you can learn as a family group. If you have a large group wishing to learn we can try to organise a specific course just for you.

How will I learn? - Courses generally run as group lessons, though we aim to introduce all participants to at least one individual lesson as part of their course. In addition to training, participants will also take part in a range of simulated and free fencing bouts, against their fellow participants and more experienced fencers.

Why is the Senior Beginners Course more expensive for Over 18's? - The course is more expensive for those aged over 18 due to the increased cost of British Fencing membership for that age group. British Fencing membership is compulsory for members of the club as it provides you with insurance cover to fence.

Are your coaches available for private events? - Yes, the majority of our coaches also coach outside of our club. If you're looking to have fencing at your event / school / centre please do contact us.
